While Houston, TX is not known for having extremely cold winters, the city is no stranger to blasts of arctic wind and below-freezing temperatures. If you’re a resident of H-Town, chances are you’ve dealt with a frozen car door lock at some point.

Although we’re nearing the end of winter season, there’s still a month or so to go until spring arrives. It can get quite chilly late at night and early in the morning, and freezing car locks are still a possibility. Over the course of this blog post, we’ll provide some pro tips on getting into your car when the locks are iced up.

Try the Getting In From the Other Side

If you find your car lock is frozen, the first thing you should do is try getting in from the other side. Quite often, one door lock is more iced up than the other. If you have a hatchback, you can even try getting in from the back—if you don’t mind climbing over the seats. However, refrain from forcing the key into the lock as you can damage it, or worse, break the key inside.

Try Heating the Key

Another method that’s known to be effective involves heating up the key before inserting it into the lock. It’s needless to say that only the metal part of the key should be heated up, so the fob isn’t damaged. Use a lighter to heat up the key for 10 to 15 seconds. This should be enough to melt the ice in the lock. If the key doesn’t go in the first time, don’t force it. Heat the key up and try again.

Use a De-Icer

It’s always useful to keep a bottle of de-icer in your garage. If you find your car door locks iced up, all you need to do is insert the nozzle in the key hole and give it a few squeezes. It should melt away the ice in a matter of minutes and you can be on your way. However, using a de-icer repeatedly can wash away the oil and damage electronics within the door lock.

If you’ve tried all the above techniques and still can’t get into your car, its best to call a reliable auto locksmith.
